Integrating hardware security modules with enterprise database engines for master key protection and automated rotation.
To prevent performance degradation during large-scale database operations, modern engines utilize a two-tier key hierarchy: data is encrypted using an internal Database Encryption Key (DEK), which is in turn encrypted (wrapped) by a Master Encryption Key (MEK). DataHSM stores the MEK in certified hardware, ensuring that database administrators cannot extract plain-text master keys.
DataHSM allows enterprise databases to rotate their Master Encryption Keys annually without re-encrypting terabytes of underlying table data, completing key rotation in under 2 seconds.
